EU ministers agree on new education targets

Hello everybody! We've been talking a lot during these two school years about the Lisbon priorities and the 5 benchmarks for 2010.

And now we actually are in 2010 and the European Council is setting new benchmarks for the future.

So a 2020 strategy is being discussed. Have a look at the European Commission Website for more info: http://ec.europa.eu/education/news/news2284_en.htm

  1. Thank you, Laura, for the link and for reminding all of us the European priorities. I really need to be reminded that " no man is an island" and that we have to work in favour of social inclusion.

  2. Which are the five benkmarks? I thought they were eight?
    "The European Framework for Key Competences for Lifelong Learning identifies and defines eight key competences necessary for personal fulfilment, active citizenship, social inclusion and employability in a knowledge society:
    1. communication in the mother tongue;
    2. communication in foreign languages;
    3. mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology;
    4. digital competence;
    5. learning to learn;
    6. social and civic competences;
    7. sense of initiative and entrepreneurship;
    8. cultural awareness and expression."

  3. Hi Agneta, those in your post are the eight priorities for 2010.

    The 5 benchmarks are the targets EU countries had to reach by 2010:
    1. By 2010, the percentage of low achieving 15-year olds in reading literacy in the EU should decrease by at least 20%.
    2. By 2010, a share of early school leavers of no more than 10% should be reached.
    3. By 2010, at least 85% of 22 year-olds in the EU should have should have completed upper-secondary education.
    4. The total number of msT graduates in the EU should increase by at least 15%, while gender imbalance should decrease.
    5. The EU average level of participation in lifelong learning should reach at least 12.5% of the working age population (25-64).

    What I find funny, is that even if there are still no info about whether the benchmarks were reached or not, the EU Council has already set new benchmarks for 2020. That's strange...

  5. Thanks Laura - I learn so much from you!! We don't discuss those at my school, I have actually never heard of them before. I don't know if we fulfill them in Sweden, maybe most of them... I absolutely agree that there should be an evaluation!

  6. P.S.
    I checked the link Laura wrote, and there is a report from 2009 - that's as close as you can get to an evaluation for now, I guess. Really interesting figures there!

  7. Hello Laura.
    I agree with you. I wonder where can we see how those benchmark objectives for 2010 have been met.I'm afraid we are still far from them and as usual they are only an example of good intentions that look very nice on public declarations.
    As for the key competences mentioned by Agnetta, I think that each European country has chosen to pursue a different number of them. In Spain there are only six.Regards.
